Medicare Usually Covers Cataract Surgery

In the US, cataract surgery was usually covered through Part B, Medicare Advantage, or Medigap, while medications generally required Part D or bundled drug benefits.
Part B typically covered presurgery eye visits, traditional or laser surgery, anesthesia, follow-up care, and one pair of corrective lenses after surgery.
With Part B alone, patients generally paid the deductible first, then a share of approved costs; premium eyeglass frames and prescriptions were extra.
Medicare Advantage plans matched Part B surgery coverage and often bundled drug benefits; some also included vision coverage for routine exams or nonsurgical cataract care.
If cataract surgery is expected, compare outpatient copays, deductibles, prescription coverage, and vision benefits, because facility type, surgery type, and plan design affect costs.
